The 'Balboa' gets its name from the Balboa Penisula at Newport Beach 40 miles south of Los Angeles in California. The dance was first performed at the Beach Pavilion then subsequently at The famous Rendezvous Ballroom. Dance historians are undecided as to its origins, citing Foxtrot, Collegiate Shag, Charleston or even the Rhumba. Balboa is an 8 count dance so an affinity with other 8 count dances may be the connection. However this shouldn't rule out a connection with 6 beat dances as Balboa dancers of the time would have been influenced by their knowledge of dances around at that time.
There are two different forms of Balboa. Danced in its pure form , it is completely in closed position as dance halls of the time had strict codes of conduct regarding the more exuberant dances. You dance in close contact with your partner and there are no spins or turns. It is this very pure and simple economy of movement which make it entirely suited to very fast tempo music. It can also be danced to varied speeds including very slow!
Bal Swing is a fancy form of Balboa that allows spins, turns, tricks and dips. Even aerials. Providing they are used in conjuction with recognisable Balboa footwork. Possibly the name derives from other forms of swing dance that were being danced at that time.
So there you have it . A very potted history of the Balboa. It is a gorgeous dance that allows couples to dance to very fast tracks such as trad Jazz or very slow music. It offers the dancer yet more choice. A useful and beautiful dance. Book your place on this workshop and expand your repertoire!

1940's-50's Jitterbug, East Coast Swing, Jive and Stroller classes held weekly. 10 week Beginner's courses run on a 'rolling basis' taught by teachers with over 20 years experience between them, followed by improver classes.
Regular workshops held in Balboa,Shag and some ballroom to help ease our dancers into the 1940's dance scene.
Our fun classes are light-hearted with lots of laughter and patience!

No Smoking. Car Park. Venue can be found off of the Main Road, in Lebanon Gardens at the top of Stock Hill. Opposite is a large car park with free parking. The Hall is a 1910 W.I Hall, full of character with a gorgeous wooden dance floor,disabled access and kitchen facilites.
